UPDATE TO ARTICLE: Charles County To Decide On Renaming Black History Month

LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Commissioners voted Tuesday to retain the name “Black History Month” after reviewing extensive community feedback on a proposed name change to “African American Heritage Month.”

During the Feb. 4 meeting, Commissioners Thomasina Coates, B.J. Bowling, and Ralph Patterson heard a presentation from Chief Equity Officer Renesha Miles, who shared findings from community conversations and survey data. The majority of participants opposed the name change, expressing concerns about how and why the proposal was introduced. Many emphasized the national and historical significance of “Black History Month” and its inclusivity of Black people from diverse backgrounds, including the Caribbean and Latin America.

“The community really wanted us to focus on educating and bringing awareness as opposed to adjusting a title and a name that is nationally recognized and has been in place for years, absolutely,” Miles said.

Following the presentation and discussion, the board decided not to move forward with the proposed name change. While some participants supported the change to better highlight African American heritage and culture, many urged a focus on expanding Black history education beyond February. Recommendations included integrating Black history into school curriculums, forming partnerships with local organizations, and hosting cultural events.

  1. Such a dumb waste of money. These so called “anti-racists” are blatantly saying there’s something wrong with being “black”. Mental health screening would be super easy if we could legally treat these lunatics.

  2. From the above link…”On March 5, 2024, Ralph Patterson, vice president of the Board of Commissioners, proposed officially renaming “Black History Month” to “African American Heritage Month.”

With all the issues Charles County has, this shouldn’t even have had consideration. If Commissioner Patterson was trying call attention to himself, he did, but, probably, not in the way he wanted.
