LA PLATA, Md. – Charles County native Shannon Wang is working with the collaborative effort Keep La Plata Beautiful (KLPB) by using her artistic abilities to create a license plate to celebrate La Plata’s commitment to sustainability.

Shannon Wang, a full-time artist is the Chair of the Art Work Group in La Plata, is also the President of the Southern Maryland Business Network, Co-owner of Studio 53 Custom Tattoo Studio and Bird City Records in La Plata.

“I went to college in Silver Spring and have since been doing some type of artwork since graduation, whether it be designing someone’s home, designing a beer label, or painting a mural in town,” Wang told The BayNet.

To most, the license plate may look like a standard Maryland custom license plate with a bird on it. Still, the meaning of the plate is part of a larger movement that the Keep La Plata Beautiful initiative hopes more of the community can get behind.

KLPB states, “La Plata wanted a way to tell the story of La Plata’s commitment to sustainable practices through programs like Bird City Maryland, Bee City USA, Tree City USA, and a Sustainable Maryland.” They continue, “Since we are the very first Bird City, Maryland, it seemed natural to include our town’s official bird, the Purple Martin, as our symbol.”

Keep La Plata Beautiful’s main goal is to “Recognize the need for balance between environmental, social, and economic interests for overall community sustainability. KLPB encourages community engagement in environmental, beautification, and sustainable activities such as litter cleanup, planting native trees and other greenery, public art, historic preservation, and generally being responsible stewards of La Plata’s natural and manmade resources.”

KLPB encourages the nearby community to “get engaged and spread the word!”

To learn more about what they do and how exactly you can get involved, visit their Facebook or Instagram page @keeplaplatabeautiful and join their sustainable La Plata Facebook group and “share ways we can live, work, and play sustainably, so we can all thrive for years to come.”
