
LA PLATA, Md. — During their regular meeting on Jan. 6, the Charles County Board of Commissioners officially proclaimed Jan. 25–31, 2026, as Catholic Schools Week in Charles County.
The proclamation recognizes the annual nationwide observance of Catholic Schools Week and highlights the contributions of Catholic education within the county. The three Catholic elementary schools serving the region under the Archdiocese of Washington — Archbishop Neale School, St. Mary’s Bryantown and St. Peter’s School.
The 2026 theme, “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community,” emphasizes the role of Catholic schools in forming students in faith, mind and spirit, with a focus on holiness through ordinary life, service and family involvement.
The commissioners noted that these schools provide academic programs and promote moral and spiritual values, fostering self-discipline grounded in respect. The proclamation further commended Catholic schools in Charles County for their strong commitment to outreach and community service.
The proclamation was accepted on behalf of local Catholic schools by Ms. Somosky, a second-grade teacher at St. Peter’s School, who attended the presentation with her sons, Cooper and Reid.
Catholic Schools Week is a nationwide annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, typically observed during the last week of January. It’s sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) in partnership with dioceses and Catholic schools across the country.
