LA PLATA, Md. — Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) announced a major change to its Project Lead The Way career and technical education (CTE) programs. Beginning with the 2025–26 school year, students interested in the Engineering or Biomedical Science pathways must apply during their eighth-grade year to be considered for admission.

Much like the process for CTE programs at North Point High School, admission will be application-based, and accepted students will attend a designated high school based on their existing school zone.

According to CCPS, the shift is intended to enhance instruction and more efficiently utilize resources for the Project Lead The Way curriculum. Students will continue to have access to valuable opportunities such as internships, apprenticeships, dual enrollment and career certifications with state endorsements.

This change will not impact current students enrolled in either program. Those already participating will continue to complete their chosen CTE pathway at their current home school.

Project Lead The Way: Engineering

The Engineering program prepares students for further education and careers in engineering and engineering technology. In the final course, students complete an industry-mentored capstone project in Engineering Design and Development.

Students who qualify may earn transcripted credit at PLTW-affiliated colleges and universities nationwide, including the University of Maryland–Baltimore County (UMBC).

Project Lead The Way: Biomedical Sciences

The Biomedical Sciences program is based on national standards for science, mathematics, English language arts and Health Care Cluster Foundation Standards. The program equips students for both entry-level employment and advanced study in the medical field.

Stevenson University, Maryland’s PLTW Biomedical Sciences Affiliate University, offers transcripted credit to students who meet specific academic requirements.
