
WALDORF, Md. — Ivy and Pearls of Southern Maryland Community Charities, Inc., in collaboration with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Nu Zeta Omega Chapter and the Charles County Department of Health, will host a World No Tobacco Day Art and Poetry Showcase on May 13, 2025, at 6 p.m. at Westlake High School, 3300 Middletown Road in Waldorf.
The free event will spotlight original artwork and poetry from local students in grades 6 through 12, raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products, particularly those marketed toward youth.
Ephraim Nehemiah, acclaimed writer and educator known for elevating Black queer artistry, will host the event. Nehemiah, a published author and teaching artist based in Baltimore, holds titles such as 2021 IPS Slam Champion and 2022 Southern Fried Poetry Champion.
The evening will also feature a performance by Black Chakra, a nationally recognized hip-hop and spoken word artist celebrated for his commanding stage presence and impactful poetry. Both performers are expected to deliver powerful messages encouraging youth empowerment and tobacco-free living.
Student artists and writers are encouraged to participate. Visual and written submissions will be accepted at the showcase.
