After six weeks of baseball, the Charles- St. Maryโs Menโs Baseball League (CHASM) has been off to a fun and competitive start. The Bumpy Oak Bombers have held down the number 1 spot since Opening Day but after splitting a double header Sunday, June 7th with the Cubs, the Bombers suffered their first loss of the season. The first game resulted in a 6-4 Cubs win and the second game ending 6-0 in Bumpy Oaks favor. The Bombers now hold a record of 6-1 which still keeps them in first place. St. Maryโs is a half-game (0.5) behind Bumpy Oak in the standings putting them in second place. With a record of 5-1, St. Maryโs only loss of the year was against Bumpy Oak last Sunday, May 31st, with that game ending in a final score of 10-4. St. Maryโs had a big weekend after winning both games in a double header this past Sunday against Western Charles, final score in game 1 ending 2-1 and game 2 ending 4-0. Both Bumpy Oak and St. Maryโs are playing a pair of games next weekend (Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th). Bumpy Oak is hosting the Bayhawks and Western Charles. Both games being held at Rainbow Construction Field at 12 pm. St. Maryโs is taking on the Storm next Saturday at Gwynn Park High School and the Bayhawks on Sunday at St. Maryโs College. Both games starting at 1 pm. Elsewhere in the league, the Cubs and Black Sox remain neck and neck on the season, both with 4 wins on the year but the Cubs remain a half-game ahead in 3rd place with 2 losses while the Black Sox are in 4th place with 3. ย The Black Sox also had a double header this past weekend. They took on the Storm and were able pick up both wins on the day with the final score in game 1 ending 12-2 and game 2 ending 8-1. ย Itโs been a tough start for the Storm who has started the year out 0-7 but has been improving every weekend. Western Charles was the only team to play three games this past weekend winning one out of three games, only beating the Bayhawks Saturday with the final score ending 15-2. That was the Bayhawks only game this weekend moving them to a record of 1-5 on the year and in 6th place in the standings. After going 1-2 this past weekend, Western Charles is now in 5th place in the standings with 3 wins and 4 losses. Even though it was a tough weekend for Western Charles they do have something to cheer about. Johnny Klopfer of Western Charles was named the Player of the Week. Over the weekend he went 6 for 9, 3 runs scored, 4 RBIโs, 2 Home Runs and a stolen base.
