BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart announced a new partnership with OpenAI on Tuesday, Oct. 14, that will allow users to shop at Walmart through ChatGPT using Instant Checkout.
Users will be able to “just chat and buy” and allow the store to handle the rest, according to the release, and will be able to help customers find the right items and check out seamlessly. The company envisions an artificial intelligence (AI) experience that helps customers with meal prep, household item restocking or finding new products. Walmart refers to this new era of AI-assisted shopping as “agentic commerce.”
“For many years now, e-commerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change. There is a native AI experience coming that is multimedia, personalized and contextual. We are running toward that more enjoyable and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships including this important step with OpenAI,” said Doug McMillon, president and CEO, Walmart Inc.
“We’re excited to partner with Walmart to make everyday purchases a little simpler. It’s just one way AI will help people every day under our work together,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
The company did not give a set date on when the feature will be available. Southern Maryland has Walmart locations in Dunkirk, Prince Frederick, California, La Plata and Waldorf, so residents will likely have numerous opportunities to try out this tool.
Walmart and Sam’s Club already use AI tools in their operations, citing reduced customer care wait times and fashion production timelines as successful implementations of AI tools.
