Child Passenger Killed In Car Crash Following Police Chase Through Southern Maryland

BALTIMORE – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating a fatal crash following a police pursuit that began in Calvert County and ended in Harwood, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Monday morning.

On May 13, 2024, during the overnight hours, Calvert County Sheriff’s deputies received multiple reports of cars being broken into in neighborhoods in the Huntingtown area. While investigating the crimes, deputies were alerted to a car driving in the area believed to be associated with the car break-ins.

At approximately 5:35 a.m., deputies attempted to stop the car in the area of Plum Point Road and Ridge Road in Huntingtown, but the car failed to stop. Deputies pursued the car for approximately 25 miles into Anne Arundel County where it collided with a pick-up truck at the intersection of Birdsville Road and Solomons Island Road in Harwood.

The driver of the pick-up truck was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The three occupants of the fleeing car were also taken to an area hospital. The front seat passenger, a juvenile female, was later pronounced dead. The driver suffered critical injuries and the rear passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The IID will generally release the name of the involved deputies within two business days of the incident, although that period may be extended if there is a specific reason to believe that an officer’s safety is at risk. The identity of the decedent is being withheld in accordance with juvenile privacy laws.

The deputies were equipped with body-worn cameras. The IID will generally release body-worn camera footage within 20 business days of an incident. There may be situations where more than 20 days are necessary, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public.

  2. Felony murder charges with full terms for everyone in the car. The majority of us are sleeping during those hours to prepare for work the next day and support our children, pay bills and taxes. The growing minority is collecting from our taxes while also preying on our hard earned possessions and putting everyone at risk.
How many people in these three fleeing vehicles have had their wrists slapped and simply released by judges when they should have already been incarcerated.

  3. Where are the parents/parent of the juvenile, she’s out at 1:45 in the morning on a school night? Maybe her parent/parents should be charged with negligence? How about the innocent person driving the pickup truck that was hit, who’s responsible for his expenses? Someone has to be held accountable for the damage done. The laws need to be changed to address this problem ASAP to protect the innocent hard working people who are being victimize by criminals who have no fear of the consequences of their actions.

  4. the so called “child” was involved in the theft. Her family has to deal with a terrible loss! but she choose to be involved in the bad ideas of others or her own.

    1. I see why you have racist children in Calvert County just be reading these posts. Just as these children should be prosecuted to the fullest as should the juvenile “hate mongers” who ravish their education system. There’s no need to ask “WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?” because all know where their parents are. Right beside their child teaching to spew racial hate end division. What a sad people.

      1. HowdaHell, There was not one word mentioned in these comments about race. Time to find another dumb excuse for bad behavior because the race card doesn’t work

    1. No, she didn’t deserve it, but it unfortunately was a consequence of her actions. This is another reason that tough parenting is a necessity and parents/guardians have a responsibility and should be accountable for neglecting those responsibilities.

  5. How many have died or had life changing injuries as a result of this chase policy? Not just criminals getting injured in these crashes. Surely more drones and helicopters is what’s needed?

  6. What message are we all receiving from the National news to our local news? Our youth are being used in a political and spiritual divide. We can argue punishments and point fingers to who is more to blame, meanwhile, the more laws are being written to take away your sovereignty freedoms. We are and have been losing our youth to the “world” for a long time, I’m surprised I made it. Most parents are too busy working to pay bills that are just too high to survive. The mental health crisis is from all the obstacles laid in our path to happiness, like the dangling proverbial carrot, we will kill ourselves and each other to reach. We have lawlessness in the land because we have a lack of morals. america was united for people under God not by corporations and their government. We need to get involved with are children. Then get involved in the community. Then start having these real conversations about what we can do here in St. Mary’s county that will set an example to the rest of the state etc..

  7. It’s really simple, it’s about accountability. Which unfortunately no longer exists for many and reinforces their belief that they can do what they want when they want with little repercussion. Stop making excuses and hold your kids accountable for their actions day 1. Schools need to do the same without pushback and excuses from the parents. Hold parents accountable for their kids actions. Don’t make this issue more difficult than it has to be.
