DUNKIRK, Md. — Calvert County Parks and Recreation announced on their Facebook page that the dog park at Dunkirk District Park would be closed Monday, Dec. 15, to add a “chill out area” to the park.
Dunkirk District Park, located at 10750 Southern Maryland Blvd., is an 81-acre park in Calvert County featuring baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, a skate park, walking paths and more. The park is also popular for its dog park, which is currently split into two sections — one for small dogs under 30 pounds, and another for large dogs.
“The Dunkirk Dog Park will be closed Monday, Dec. 15, to allow for the reconfiguration of the dog park to create three distinct areas: a ‘chill out’ area for dogs who need a break or slower introduction, a small dog area for dogs under 30 pounds and a main area where all dogs are welcome,” the post said.
The park has a two-door entry, so dogs can come in through the gate and wait in a penned-off section before entering the larger park. This can help some dogs get acclimated and reduce the number of dogs able to escape. However, this space is small and dogs in the park often run over to entering dogs, which doesn’t provide much of that needed “chill out” space.
Dunkirk is one of just three dog parks in Calvert and popular for residents in the northern part of the county. Dog owners love the space for dogs to run and having a smaller park available for smaller dogs.
Any visitors to the dog park are advised to read the rules and regulations before bringing your dog, or dogs, to play, and keep an eye on Parks and Recreation’s Facebook for more information about the updates.
