‘Spring Forward’ Daylight Savings Time

CALIFORNIA, Md. — Residents will lose an hour of sleep but gain an extra hour of daylight in the evening as Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Clocks should be set forward one hour, though many electronic devices will adjust automatically.

The semi-annual time change serves as a reminder for households to conduct safety and preparedness checks, officials say. Fire departments recommend testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, replacing units that are more than 10 years old with 10-year, sealed battery models available at hardware stores.

Emergency officials also suggest using the date to update family emergency plans and refresh home and automobile first-aid kits.

The time shift will alter local daylight hours significantly. In California, Md., sunrise on Saturday will take place at 6:25 a.m., with sunset at 6:04 p.m. By Sunday, following the time change, sunrise will be at 7:24 a.m., and sunset will extend to 7:05 p.m.

Daylight Saving Time will continue until Nov. 2, when clocks will be set back an hour.

The practice dates back to 1784, when Benjamin Franklin first proposed the idea as a way to conserve energy. It was briefly implemented year-round during the 1973 oil crisis to reduce electricity consumption, though that effort lasted only a few months. In 1975, Congress established a standardized schedule from April to October, later extended in 2007 under the Energy Policy Act, which added four additional weeks to the observance.

While Daylight Saving Time remains a point of debate, it is still widely used across the United States, except in Arizona and Hawaii, where the time change is not observed.
