LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Don’t put those winter coats away just yet— Maryland is in for a frosty wake-up call.
The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Watch for Calvert and St. Mary’s counties from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, with temperatures expected to dip between 28 and 32 degrees. It’s an unusually cold stretch for early April and one that could catch gardeners and homeowners off guard.
While much of the region escaped alerts earlier in the week because the growing season hasn’t officially begun, this latest forecast changes things. Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could damage crops, kill sensitive vegetation, and even harm unprotected outdoor plumbing.

“Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold,” the weather service advised in its alert.
The chill is expected to be short-lived, but for those hoping spring had fully arrived—Mother Nature has other plans.
