CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. – In 2008, the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland (TCCSMD) created the Southern Maryland Veteranโs Regional Advisory Committee (VRAC) to bring together elected officials, Veterans Affairs State representatives, US Department of Veteran Affairs Washington DC VA Medical Center leadership and key stakeholders to discuss issues and initiatives of importance to the Veteran community in the Southern Maryland Region. Based on a 2009 VRAC study, Veterans’ Integrated Healthcare Recommendations for Southern Maryland, it was determined that a sustainable solution to the provision of VA healthcare services in Southern Maryland required a new, full service Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). The current clinic operating in Charlotte Hall provides limited services and does not adequately meet the needs of the veterans in Southern Maryland. Those in need of specialized programs and services must travel to Washington, DC or Baltimore, which is onerous on the veterans living in Southern Maryland.
In 2012, through the combined efforts of the VRAC, former Senator Barbara Mikulski and Congressman Steny Hoyer, federal funding was secured for a new $6.6 million ADA-compliant CBOC in Charlotte Hall. After numerous starts and stops we are pleased to announce that the contract has been awarded to developer FD Stonewater. Calvert County Commissionersโ President Evan K. Slaughenhoupt Jr., chair of the VRAC remarked โWe are thrilled to learn this long overdue project is finally underway.โ The CBOC will be located on Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD across from the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.
On June 6, 2018 the VA signed a 20-year lease with the developer for 17,741 net useable square feet (NUSF), including 120 parking spaces. According to the current schedule, the design and build will begin in late Winter/early Spring 2020.
Additionally, the VA is leasing space in Lexington Park, MD to establish a new satellite clinic. The location is the 3rd floor of the East Run Medical Center, owned by Cherry Cove Land Development Company Inc. The VA and the developer are working in partnership to ensure the build-out of the clinic space will meet the VA specifications.
