Comprehensive Senior And Adult Programs Available Through St. Mary’s County Aging Services

LEONARDTOWN, Md. St. Mary’s County Department of Aging & Human Services is offering a broad range of programs and activities for adults and older residents designed to support wellness, social engagement, lifelong learning and community involvement.

Residents ages 50 and older can participate in in-person and virtual activities, including fitness classes, educational workshops, arts and crafts, social events and more, officials said. Programs are hosted at the county’s three senior activity centers: Garvey in Leonardtown, Loffler in Great Mills and Northern in Charlotte Hall, which serve as hubs for daily classes, events and resources.

Program highlights include:

  • Fitness and Wellness: Classes such as chair and mat yoga, EnhanceFitness, Zumba Gold, tai chi, low-impact aerobics, walking clubs and strength-training sessions help participants stay active and healthy.
  • Social and Recreational Activities: Card games, trivia, Bunco nights, theme parties and group outings provide opportunities for socializing and community connection.
  • Educational Opportunities: Workshops and seminars on topics such as senior benefits, technology usage, nutrition and responsible living help residents build skills and knowledge.
  • Arts, Crafts and Special Events: Creative classes — from painting and papercraft to virtual reality demonstrations — are offered regularly throughout the year.
  • Virtual Options: Live virtual classes and activities through the Virtual Senior Activity Center allow residents to participate from home.

Officials noted that activities often require advance registration, with most classes listed on the county’s online catalog for Aging & Human Services. Residents can create an account now and begin registering for programs once registration opens in the new CivicPlus system. The upgraded platform streamlines sign-ups and provides easier access to class schedules and program details.

In addition to activity programming, the department operates the Aging and Disability Resource Center (Maryland Access Point), which serves as a single point of contact for information about senior services, benefits counseling and long-term care planning.

Senior activity centers also provide congregate meals, support groups, technology tutoring, caregiver resources and opportunities for volunteer engagement, officials said.
