LUSBY, Md. — Together, Constellation and Optimist Club of Calvert recently put 100 bicycles and helmets in the hands of deserving local children. Constellation employees assembled the bikes and donated them in Calvert County, home of its Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, Maryland’s largest producer of clean, emissions-free energy.
The giveaway event, held on Dec. 7 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Lusby, was a resounding success, with some children receiving a new bike for the first time. The bikes were coordinated by Free Bikes 4 Kidz Maryland. All totaled, 94 children in 64 families received one, with another six bikes donated to Toys for Tots of Calvert County.

“I just wanted to say thank you to each and every person who had a hand in the bike giveaways,” commented parents whose son received a bike in a “thank you” note to Constellation and Optimist Club. “My son is sitting in his room on the bike. He has a disability, and you all were so kind during bike pick up. Times are hard here and everywhere, so thank you for making a young man happy and his momma too.”
This initiative was part of the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center’s ongoing community engagement efforts. Constellation has also contributed $185,000 since September to organizations supporting environmental, educational and hunger programs in Calvert County.
“We are thrilled to have partnered with the Optimist Club of Calvert and Free Bikes 4 Kidz Maryland for this wonderful event,” said Pete Moodie, Calvert Cliffs Site Vice President. “Being able to bring joy to children in our community is truly heartwarming. This event exemplifies our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve.”
