Coping With Those Maryland Seasonal Allergies

CALIFORNIA, Md. – If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you’re probably feeling the effects already.

Experts say since the winter was really dry, trees, shrubs, and flowers are already starting to bloom. The CDC says 90% of allergy sufferers get relief from over-the-counter medications, but many people don’t start taking them soon enough.

For allergy sufferers to enjoy springtime in Maryland, doctors suggest limiting your time outside on dry, windy days, keeping windows and doors closed, taking a shower, changing clothes after being outside, and using a dehumidifier in your home.

Many people also believe eating local honey can help ease your allergies or cure them altogether. The idea is to ingest the pollens that cause your symptoms so you can build up immunity against them. But the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America says very little of the common pollen allergens actually make it into the honey. Bees eat nectar and gather pollen from flowers, which is not the same pollen that causes people to suffer. That comes from trees, grass, and weeds.

Regardless of what method you choose to keep your allergies at bay, doctors do encourage people to start taking medications as early as February to get ahead of it.
