Leonardtown, MD – The State of Maryland and St. Mary’s County Government have begun cleanup efforts to remove snow and ice from sidewalks, intersections and crosswalks along Great Mills Road (MD 246).
State Highway and the Department of Public Works and Transportation have mobilized forces to begin the process of clearing the snow and ice. The work is expected to continue through the upcoming weekend. Snow and ice gathered from the sidewalks will be stored on the Great Mills Swimming Pool property.
“The recent recurring winter storms and freezing weather are unusual events for St. Mary’s County,” said Dr. Rebecca Bridgett, County Administrator. “As such, the Department of Public Works and Transportation is moving ahead with the State to clear the sidewalks, intersections and crosswalks and make them safe for pedestrians.”
Maryland Transportation Code § 8-630 (c) (6) (i) states “after sidewalks and bicycle paths are constructed (by the Administration) … they shall be maintained and repaired by the political subdivision in which they are located.” For unusual weather events, DPWT may request quotes for removal of snow/ice in certain areas. The department estimates the cost to clear the sidewalks, intersections and crosswalks along Great Mills Road to be between $20,000 and $30,000.
“The commissioners have heard from citizens about icy and snow covered sidewalks on Great Mills Road and are unanimous in our determination to get them cleared,” said Commissioner President Randy Guy. “Our number one concern is for the safety of pedestrians in the area. We don’t want to see anyone get injured or killed because the sidewalks are inaccessible.”
Historically, the county’s operational plan has relied on the willingness of residents and businesses to clear sidewalks in front of their homes and businesses because funds and forces were not available. Residents and businesses are encouraged to clear the walks at least one shovel’s width within 24 hours after snowfall ceases.
