LARGO, Md. — Prince George’s County officials have enacted new legislation aimed at removing confusion around how quickly a missing person can be reported, following a high-profile case that drew statewide attention.
The measure, known as DaCara Rose’s Law, was unanimously approved by the County Council and signed into law in early April 2026. The legislation makes clear that residents can report a missing person immediately and are not required to wait any set amount of time.
The bill, introduced in February, was designed in part to address a widespread misconception that individuals must wait 24 hours before contacting police — something officials say has never been required but is still commonly believed.
The law is named after DaCara Thompson, a 19-year-old from Prince George’s County whose disappearance in August 2025 prompted urgent community searches and widespread concern. She was reported missing shortly after she was last seen, and her case quickly gained traction across the region.
Her body was later discovered in Anne Arundel County days after she disappeared. Investigators alleged she was killed soon after her disappearance, and charges were later filed in connection with her death.
County leaders said the legislation is intended to ensure families act without hesitation and to reinforce that law enforcement will respond immediately to missing person reports.
In addition to clarifying reporting timelines, the law emphasizes public awareness and outreach efforts, particularly focused on vulnerable populations, including women and girls.
Officials say the goal is simple: eliminate hesitation, speed up response, and prevent future cases from being delayed due to uncertainty.

WRONG lAW.
THESE LIBERALS SHOULD FOCUS ON DEATH PENALTY FOR ILLEGALS COMING TO OUR COUNTRY AND KILLING INNOCENT AMERICANS.
This was political theater and exploitation of a bad situation. There was no required delay to report a missing person. Shame on those that made it seem that way. They are exploiting the ignorance of their constituents. Meanwhile they provide sanctuary to illegal immigrants and do not run their backgrounds or cooperate with ICE or any federal law enforcement to find people like the person who killed this girl.
