Hollywood, MDย  – The deadline for filing to run in the 2018 Maryland Primary is Tuesday evening, Feb. 27 at 9 p.m. Last week, five candidates for governorโ€”including incumbent Larry Hoganโ€”filed. The Democrats vying for the governorโ€™s mansionโ€”Rushern Baker, Ben Jealous, Rich Madaleno and Alec Rossโ€”also revealed their running mates. Baker, the outgoing Prince Georgeโ€™s county executive tapped attorney Elizabeth Embry of Baltimore City. Jealous, former president and chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) selected Susan Turnbull, former Maryland Democratic Party chair as his lieutenant governor candidate. Madaleno, a state senator representing District 18, chose Luwanda Jenkins, former special secretary for Minority Affairs in Maryland. To complete the gender balancing, Ross, a technology expert who worked under Hillary Clinton when she was secretary of State, picked Julie Verratti, a craft brewery owner as his running mate.

On the local political scene, Democrat Dennis Fritz of Charles County filed to run for Congress in Maryland District 5. Three Republican candidates filed in District 28โ€™s House of Delegates race. They are Dave Campbell, Jim Crawford and Vanessa Jones. There are three seats in District 28. In that districtโ€™s state senate race, John Leonard is running for the seat currently held by Democrat Mac Middleton. In District 29, a Democratโ€”Thomas Brewerโ€”filed last week. The seat us currently occupied by Senator Steve Waugh, a Republican.

In county commissionersโ€™ races, in Calvert, retired school administrator Ted Haynie has filed to run as a Democrat in District One. Another Democrat, Susie Hance Wells has filed in District Two. In Charles County, incumbent Amanda Stewart filed Monday, Feb. 26 to seek a second term in District Three.

House of Delegates – District 27B: Republicans Philip Parenti and Michael Thomas. District 27C: Democrat Jason Fowler. District 28 (three seats): Republicans Bill Dotson, Dave Campbell, Jim Crawford and Vanessa Jones; and Democrats John Coller, Debra Davis, Edward Holland, Edith Patterson and C.T. Wilson. District 29 A: Republican Matt Morgan, District 29B: Republican Deb Rey and Democrat Brian Crosby. District 29C: Republican Jerry Clark and Democrat Julia M. Nichols.

Calvert County – Commissioner At Large: Republicans Buddy Hance, Bill Heine and Tom Hejl; and Democrats Matt Bennett and Duwane Rager. Commissioner District One: Republicans Emad Dides and Mike Hart; and Democrats Tricia Powell and Theodore โ€œTedโ€ Haynie. Commissioner District Two: Republicans Mark Arness and Bruce Henkelman and Democrat Susie Hance-Wells. Commissioner District Three: Republican Kelly McConkey and Democrat Holly Heinz Budd. Stateโ€™s Attorney: Republicans Kathryn Marsh and Andrew Rappaport. Judge of Orphans Court: Republicans Leslie Downs, Ted LeBlanc and Derek Sebedra; and Democrat Thomas M. Pelagatti. Sheriff: Republicans Mike Evans, Craig W. Kontra and Kinsey Weems; and Democrat Michael Hawkins. Clerk of Circuit Court: Democrat Kathy Smith. Register of Wills: Democrat Margaret H.
