PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Maryland’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating a fatal police-involved crash that occurred early Friday, Dec. 12, 2025, in Prince Frederick, Calvert County, following a traffic pursuit involving a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID), the crash occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. when a Calvert County deputy observed a Nissan sedan commit a traffic violation in the 500 block of Route 4 (Solomons Island Road). The deputy attempted a traffic stop near Prince Frederick Road and Calvert Hills Road, activating emergency equipment, but the driver failed to stop.

About one mile later, the Nissan entered the intersection of Route 4 and Stoakley Road at a high rate of speed and collided with a Honda sedan driven by an adult woman. A third vehicle, a Kia SUV, was also struck in the collision.

The driver of the Honda, identified as 58-year-old Servon Gatewood of Lusby, was transported to Calvert Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The driver and passenger of the Kia were taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, 32-year-old Savon Samuel of Pikesville, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries before being transferred to the Calvert County Detention Center. Court records show Samuel is being held without bond following bail reviews on Dec. 12 and Dec. 15.

Charging documents allege the Nissan was fleeing from an attempted traffic stop and traveling more than 83 miles per hour in a posted 35 mph zone prior to the crash. Investigators also determined the vehicle was displaying an improper registration plate and had an expired registration, according to the probable cause statement.

Samuel has been charged with felony negligent manslaughter by automobile and driver in violation of traffic law resulting in death or bodily injury, among other related traffic offenses. A trial scheduling hearing is set for Jan. 12, 2026, in Calvert District Court.

The involved deputy was identified as Deputy Ryan Campbell, a four-year veteran assigned to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division. Authorities confirmed the deputy was equipped with a body-worn camera at the time of the incident.

The IID, with assistance from the Maryland State Police Crash Team, continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision. Under agency protocol, body-worn camera footage is generally released within 20 business days, though that timeline may be extended.

Anyone with information related to the crash, including cell phone or surveillance video, is asked to contact the Independent Investigations Division at (410) 576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.maryland.gov.

  1. Should have stayed in Charles County, he would have been released on personal recognizance a few hours later.

    1. Which is disgusting. Those who do this and those foolish enough to release must never have buried a family member 🤢
