LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A confrontation inside the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center has resulted in criminal charges against a Great Mills man after a correctional officer was injured during a booking process that authorities say escalated into physical resistance.

According to reports, Kwasi Nkokheli Jabar Agyeman, 37, of Great Mills, was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center on March 18, 2026. During the intake process, correctional officers attempted to conduct a standard search of his person.

Authorities allege that Agyeman became highly agitated, verbally combative, and resistant to officers’ efforts to complete the search. Due to his escalating behavior, officers made the decision to place him inside a cell in order to safely continue the process.

Court documents indicate that as correctional officers were exiting the cell following the search, Agyeman allegedly pushed one officer through the cell door. Officials report that he was then subdued and placed onto his bunk; however, during the struggle, Agyeman’s head reportedly collided with the officer, resulting in an injury to the officer’s left eyebrow.

Authorities further state that Agyeman allegedly continued to exhibit physically combative behavior, prompting officers to secure him in an emergency restraint chair to prevent further harm to staff and himself.

Charging documents show Agyeman has been charged with second-degree assault on a Department of Corrections employee. He was released on a $1,500 bond. Court records indicate that his trial is scheduled for April 21, 2026, in St. Mary’s County District Court.

Under Maryland law, second-degree assault involving a correctional or Department of Corrections employee carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
