LEONARDTOWN, Md. — St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks is making a splash this spring with a new Lifeguard Certification Course at the Wellness & Aquatics Center, offering residents a chance to get trained just in time for the busy summer season.

The first step for interested participants is a required pre-course evaluation, set for Saturday, May 3, beginning at 9 a.m. The evaluation, which costs $5, will test essential swimming skills needed for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program. Upon successful completion, participants will receive instructions to register for the full certification course.

The main Lifeguard Certification Course will run across three Saturdays — May 10, 17, and 24 — from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendance at all three sessions is mandatory to earn certification.

Open to individuals ages 15 and older, the course offers comprehensive training in water rescue techniques, CPR, AED usage, and first aid, equipping graduates with the skills needed to safeguard pools and aquatic facilities throughout the county.

Registration for both the pre-course evaluation and the full certification course is available online at WAC-Center. For more information, residents are encouraged to contact Aquatics & Wellness Programs Coordinator Ross Schneider at ross.schneider@stmaryscountymd.gov or visit the Wellness & Aquatics Center webpage at www.stmaryscountymd.gov/Recreate/WellnessCenter.

With summer approaching, officials say the need for qualified lifeguards is greater than ever. Recreation & Parks encourages early registration, as space is limited.
