Prince Frederick, MD โ€“ During their July 18 meeting the Calvert County Commissioners recognized a local cop who was in the right place at the right time this past May. The board saluted Dfc. Vaughn D. Evans of the Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office, whose quick actions saved the life of a distraught woman. According to information provided by Calvert County Government, on May 28, Evans, who was off duty from the sheriffโ€™s office but working security at Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa, dove into the bay to rescue a woman who reportedly had intentionally jumped into the water. The water temperature was quite cold at the time.

According to the account provided to county government officials, other patrons who witnessed the drama said the woman had indicated she wanted to end her life. Deputy Evans ran to the water, swam towards the woman and was able to get her to the pier and into the arms of several people who pulled her to safety.

Both the woman and Deputy Evans were transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital, examined and released.

โ€œI canโ€™t imagine jumping in the water like that,โ€ said Commissioner Evan Slaughenhoupt.
โ€œThe water runs swift down there,โ€ Commissioner Pat Nutter added.

Deputy Evans posed for pictures with the commissioners but didnโ€™t have much to say about his heroics, preferring instead to introduce his wife, Dominque, the board and others in the meeting room.

Calvert Mike Evans said he was proud of the deputyโ€™s actions during the May incident. โ€œHe [Deputy Evans] does a great job with the school system,โ€ the sheriff said of the deputy, who is one of the agencyโ€™s school liaison officers.
