CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. — One person was injured after a vehicle crashed into a utility pole and caught fire Tuesday morning in Charles County, prompting a response from emergency crews and a temporary road closure.
The crash occurred around 10:03 a.m. on March 31, 2026, along Oaks Road near the former Southern Maryland Pre-Release Unit. Emergency personnel arrived to find a single vehicle that had struck an electric pole, bringing down live wires and igniting a fire.
Officials said the driver was able to self-extricate from the burning vehicle prior to the arrival of first responders.
Firefighters requested assistance from Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) to secure the power lines while additional crews worked to extinguish the vehicle fire. SMECO personnel arrived on scene and cut power to the area, allowing firefighters to safely bring the blaze under control.
Emergency medical services evaluated the driver at the scene before transporting them to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. The extent of the injuries has not been released.
The scene was turned over to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the crash and assisted with road closures while utility crews worked to repair the damaged pole and lines.
