Javon Lyzel Dickens

Leonardtown, MD — A Callaway man with a record of drug offenses has been sentenced for possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Javon Dickens, 24, was sentenced Nov. 23 to five years in jail by St. Maryโ€™s County Circuit Court Judge Karen Abrams, but she suspended all but nine months of that.

While Dickens was out on bond for the indictment leveled April 3 of this year, he was arrested again in September. According to the police report:ย  โ€œSt. Maryโ€™s County Vice/Narcotics detectives began making undercover purchases of cocaine from Javon Lyzell Dickens, 24 of California in various locations throughout the county. A search and seizure warrant was obtained and executed on his California residence.

Detectives recovered marijuana, related paraphernalia, โ€œcrack cocaineโ€ (street value $1,300), a digital scale with cocaine residue, more than $300 in cash and two cellular phones. A 2002 Ford Explorer was also seized.ย 

Dickens was indicted on the new charges Nov. 5 and arraignment is set for Jan. 7.

Judge Abrams pointed out in reviewing the pre-sentence investigation that Dickens also had several other drug arrests.

Dickens was represented at the sentencing hearing by Melissa Miller. Stateโ€™s Attorney Richard fritz represented the state.

While he is in jail for the April indictment, the judge authorized drug treatment if he is accepted. She also authorized work release.

A co-conspirator, identified as Courtney Ellen Lacey, 21, was also arrested along with Dickens in September. A third suspect, Joseph Franklin Sullivan, 20 of no fixed address was inside the residence and a quantity of cocaine was recovered from his shoe.

Lacey also faces an arraignment on Jan. 7. Sullivanโ€™s case in his St. Maryโ€™s County District Court and a trial has not yet been set.
