The crash that claimed the life of Ashley Sheree Barnett, 29 of Dunkirk, occurred on Sands Road, depicted on the map in red.

Lothian, MD โ€“ Police in Anne Arundel County reported a woman from Dunkirk has died from injuries she sustained in a mid-morning collision Thursday, Oct. 20 in Lothian. The womanโ€”identified as Ashley Sheree Barnett, 29โ€”was driving a 2000 Chevy Cavalier southbound on Sands Road just north of Ed Prout Road at approximately 9:46 a.m. The Chevy crossed the centerline on a curve and struck a 2007 Mack dump truck head-on.

According to police, โ€œthe impact of the collision ejected the unbelted driver from the vehicle.โ€ Barnett (pictured, left) was flown by U.S. Park Police helicopter to MedStar Washington Medical Center where she later died. The dump truck driver sustained minor injuries but refused to be transported.

โ€œThe preliminary cause of the crash is a failure of the Chevy to remain right of the centerline,โ€ a press release from the Anne Arundel County Police Department stated. โ€œThere is no indication that drugs or alcohol contributed to this collision. However, witnesses reported the Chevy driving at an excessive speed just prior to the crash, so excessive speed is likely a contributing factor. Traffic Safety [Division] is handling the investigation and any charges are pending review by the stateโ€™s attorney.โ€
