
LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Delegation celebrated eight nonprofit organizations last Thursday evening, July 17, at a Riverboat on the Potomac Community Benefit Grant Awards Ceremony. The event was held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Charles County Public Library’s La Plata Branch.
The event marked the first presentation of grant funding provided by the Riverboat on the Potomac in collaboration with the Charles County Delegation. Funded through sportsbook proceeds, the initiative supports community-based organizations working to enhance the lives of local residents.
The $50,000 in total funding was awarded to organizations that demonstrate strong service, outreach, and impact within Charles County. Recipients were recognized for their work in youth development, civic leadership, cultural education, and social support.

2025 Community Benefit Grant Award Recipients:
- Afro-American Cultural Technologies & Scientific Olympics – $3,000
- Charles County Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol – $8,000
- Charles County NAACP #7016 – $9,000
- Don’t Adjust Your C.R.O.W.N. – $5,000
- Jolly Dream Foundation – $8,000
- Stella’s Girls, Inc. – $5,000
- Upward Thrive Academy, Inc. – $7,000
- W.A.C. Hughes 1053 Elks Lodge – $5,000
Stella’s Girls, Inc. was among the honored organizations and expressed gratitude for the support. “Thank you to the Riverboat on the Potomac for investing $50,000 in our community,” the organization stated. “We were honored among seven other nonprofits for our work. We provide free, full-time programming to teens across Southern Maryland and have invested over $2 million into youth development over the last five years. With federal cuts looming, this support is essential to continue ensuring no teen is left behind.”
What Is the Riverboat on the Potomac?
Although physically located on the Potomac River off Colonial Beach, Virginia, the Riverboat on the Potomac falls under Maryland jurisdiction. Legally, it is considered part of Charles County for regulatory and taxation purposes. This unique arrangement enables Maryland to authorize and tax sportsbook operations at the facility.
