Elva Mae Byrne, 83, of Lexington Park, MD passed away on January 22, 2025 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, MD with her loving family at her side.

She was born on September 6, 1941 in Hagerstown, MD to the late Edgar Lewis Jones and Helen Jeanette (nee: Showe) Jones.

On December 7, 1958, she married the love of her life, AMSC Gregory Lodge Byrne, Sr., USN, (Ret.) in Hagerstown, MD.  They celebrated over 40 years of marriage before his passing in April 1999.  Elva traveled throughout the world with her children to support her husband’s Navy career, with one of her favorite places being in Rota, Spain; but she was always happy to come back home. Greg retired from the Navy, making Southern Maryland the family homestead.  She was employed as a Supervisor at the Drill Hall through Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) at Patuxent River Naval Air Station for many years, until her retirement in 2000.

Her hobbies included spending time on the water, fishing and crabbing. She was a delicious cook and everyone loved her homemade donuts. She made many family dinners for her children and grandchildren. She had a wicked sense of humor and was always up for a good laugh.  She liked to watch WWE wrestling, and was humored by the theatrics of it all. Her greatest love was for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she enjoyed spending time with. She was loved greatly and will be missed by all. She left us with many good times, laughs and memories to treasure.

Elva is survived by her children: Gregory Byrne, Jr. of Scotland, MD, Marguerite “Micki” Oakley (Andy) of Gibsonville, NC, George Edgar Byrne of Gibsonville, NC; and Douglas Byrne of Lexington Park, MD; seven beloved grandchildren; seven adorable great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she is also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Tina Marie Byrne, son, Michael Allen Byrne; siblings: Francis “Sonny” Jones, Edgar Jones, Alice Swaggart, Doris Thomas, and her twin brother, Donald Jones.

The family will have a celebration of life in the near future with family and friends.

All services will be private.
