vehicle fire in southern maryland

CHAPTICO, Md. — A vehicle fire in Chaptico spread to a nearby garage and surrounding brush Tuesday evening, prompting an upgraded emergency response and concerns about the fire reaching nearby woods.

The incident occurred on March 24, 2026, in the 36600 block of Manor Road, where crews were initially dispatched around 6:36 p.m. for a reported vehicle fire.

Emergency callers reported a van on fire with loud explosions and heavy black smoke visible in the area. First units arriving on scene found a van fully involved in flames, with the fire extending toward a nearby 10-by-20-foot garage structure and surrounding brush.

Due to the fire’s rapid spread and threat to nearby wooded areas, additional brush units were requested, and a water supply operation was established from the Chaptico Wharf.

Firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent further spread into the woods. The fire was brought under control at approximately 6:56 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
