MECHANICSVILLE, Md. – A Mechanicsville woman, Laura Lynn Reed, was arrested on October 14, 2024, after authorities discovered severe animal cruelty violations at her residence at 27180 Morganza Turner Road. Acting on an anonymous tip, officers from the St. Mary’s County Emergency Services Hazmat team and Animal Control Officer S. Welch entered the residence, which was deemed unsafe due to the conditions inside.
Investigators found 26 living animals amidst overwhelming filth, including feces and urine covering the floors, creating a hazardous environment with high levels of ammonia in the air. Many of the animals were in poor health, displaying signs of malnutrition, untreated fur conditions, and skin infections. Officials also recovered 15 deceased cats, some of which were found rotting inside a freezer.
The animals’ confinement inside pillowcases and exposure to extreme neglect prompted an urgent call for veterinary intervention. Dr. Dorsch, a volunteer veterinarian for the St. Mary’s County Animal Shelter, examined the animals and determined that all of them required immediate medical attention, including treatment for fur, nail, and skin conditions.
Reed, identified as the sole resident of the home, was charged with 26 counts of animal cruelty under Maryland law, specifically CR 10-604(A)(5). This statute mandates proper care for animals, including access to adequate food, water, and sanitary living conditions. Reed was found to have failed in every respect to meet these standards. Investigators reported that there were no visible food or water bowls for the animals and large quantities of waste throughout the home, making the floors soft and rotting.
On October 14, 2024, Reed was initially taken into custody under an arrest warrant executed by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department. However, during her initial appearance on October 20, 2024, she was released on her own recognizance, pending trial. Each count of animal cruelty carries a potential penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officials working to ensure the surviving animals receive the care they need and prevent further incidents of this nature.

Was the anonymous tip fueled by her appearance alone? Anything with that much makeup and tattooed eyebrows is hiding a lifestyle of filth.
She cray cray. Meoooooooow
Put this lady in jail, she doesn’t belong in society. Almost 50 animals in her home with 1/3 of them being dead and some even stuffed in her freezer. She is a broken human being and that is serial killer behavior.
Yes, yes I would.
This woman needs a mental health intervention, not prison. We live in a sad throw away society…
