LEONARDTOWN, Md. — An assault investigation in Leonardtown has led to felony charges after authorities say a local man allegedly threatened a victim with a knife and carried out a physical attack. The case involves Carlton Eugene Young, 55, who faces charges of first- and second-degree assault.
According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on Feb. 7, 2026, to a reported assault. The victim told responding officers that Young allegedly held a knife to their throat, punched them multiple times in the face and pulled out clumps of their hair during the incident.
Police documents noted visible injuries consistent with the report, including a small cut on the victim’s neck and bald spots on their scalp. Authorities reported Young left the scene prior to their arrival.
Deputies later located Young allegedly hiding in the laundry room of an apartment complex, where he was taken into custody without further incident. According to charging documents, Young allegedly denied that any assault had taken place.
Young has been charged with first-degree assault and second-degree assault. He is currently being held without bond. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for March 9, 2026.
Under Maryland law, first-degree assault is a felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison, while second-degree assault carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years of incarceration and potential fines if convicted.
