CALIFORNIA, Md. — A kitchen fire that broke out Wednesday evening at a home in the 21000 block of Bean Family Lane has been ruled accidental, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Investigators determined the fire originated in the kitchen and was contained to that area. The homeowner’s son noticed smoke coming from the dwelling and attempted to contain the flames before firefighters arrived. Both he and his mother suffered smoke inhalation and were airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for treatment.
As of Thursday, officials confirmed the woman remains in critical condition, while her son has been treated and released.
Firefighters from Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding agencies responded to the scene at 6:58 p.m. on March 19, 2025. Upon arrival, crews found smoke showing from the home and located a trapped female occupant inside. Firefighters rescued her before handing her over to emergency medical personnel.

It took approximately 40 firefighters just five minutes to bring the fire under control. Officials estimate the fire caused $10,000 in structural damage and another $10,000 in lost contents.
The home was equipped with working smoke alarms, which were present at the time of the fire. SMECO was called to secure power to the residence.
