MARBURY, Md. — Firefighters battled a fully involved house fire Monday afternoon in Marbury after multiple 911 callers reported heavy fire conditions and a dog trapped inside the residence.

The fire was reported around 1:52 p.m. Jan. 5, 2026, in the 4200 block of Rufus Madeline Place. Callers told dispatchers the fire was “bad off” and spreading rapidly. One caller said he had just arrived at his relative’s home when he discovered the fire and warned that a dog was still inside.

Crews arrived to find a one-story single-family home with fire showing from the basement and extending quickly through the structure. Commanders upgraded the response to a working fire as flames intensified and a brush fire ignited on the Bravo side of the property.

Firefighters faced several challenges during the operation, including staffing limitations, ammunition stored in the garage, and repeated disruptions to the water supply. Fire broke through the roof, prompting commanders to shift to defensive operations and order evacuations after a hole opened in the floor above the basement.

Water supply problems repeatedly halted interior operations, forcing crews to withdraw while additional tankers and supply lines were repositioned. The roof ultimately collapsed, and firefighters continued battling the blaze from outside the structure.

By about 2:21 p.m., water supply was restored and crews resumed suppression efforts. No injuries were immediately reported. The dog was reported deceased a short time later.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to investigate.
