CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — Calvert County’s Parks and Recreation Department has one idea on how kids can spend their time after an early dismissal on Jan. 21: an indoor snowball fight.

The early dismissal is for a teacher workday, so instructors can have time to catch up and plan following the day off school for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19. Schools will let out two hours ahead of their regular times, and morning and afternoon half-day pre-K will not meet on these days.

So, Parks and Recreation came up with a fun opportunity for kids to get together and let some energy out. The event will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Northeast Community Center mini gym.

The event is intended for kids ages 8 to 14, and registration is required. Snacks will be provided.

The “snowballs” will also be provided, but Parks and Recreation didn’t specify what those snowballs would be made of on the activity registration page or in their Facebook post announcing the event. They just said to bring your “skill and speed” and they’d bring the rest.

Possibilities include cotton balls, crumpled paper or balls of yarn — or maybe all three. The only way to find out is to be there. And if indoor snowball fights aren’t the winter event you’ve been dreaming of, you can check online for additional events at the Northeast Community Center and around Calvert County.
