As the Southern Maryland schools go through their graduation ceremonies, and the summer parties and craziness begins, one local graduating Senior is taking a path to serve our country and get the worldโs finest education.
Great Mills High School graduate Derrick Petett has chosen to serve our country by signing to attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Petett was an outstanding student and led the Great Mills Hornets football team to their first winning record in many years, playing running back and linebacker. On the defensive end, he led the team with 120 tackles, 5 sacks and an interception in 2009. Derrick also played Lacrosse, Baseball and ran indoor track over his four years at Great Mills. A number of colleges were looking at him for his athletic prowess, but, Petett chose a higher path.
In an exclusive interview with Petett, he said he โhas always wanted to attend the academy since I was little and is so excited to have this opportunity to learn and serve our country.โ
Derrickโs father, Broderick is a retired Navy Chief who served at Pax River Naval Air Station in Lexington Park. Derrick will major in Mechanical Engineering and expects to fulfill another lifelong dream of becoming a fighter pilot for the Navy.
He will report to Annapolis July 1 to start โPlebe Summerโ where the hot August two a days on the football field will have him in great physical shape for the challenges ahead.
The Baynet and Baynet Radio congratulate Derrick and his family for this tremendous achievement.
