GREAT MILLS, Md. – A visit to Howard University recently provided Great Mills High School students with a powerful introduction to college life, expanding their view of what is possible for their futures.
Through a partnership between Great Mills High School and the Carolyn E. Parker Foundation, students traveled to Washington, DC, to tour the Howard University campus and attend a basketball game. For many, it was their first time ever visiting a college or university, turning an abstract idea into a tangible and achievable goal.

“This experience reinforces why exposure matters,” said Ms. LaToya Carroll. “As founder and president Adrienne M. Somerville often shares, 70 percent of success is exposure, and we must continue to expose our students.”
The experience reflects the Carolyn E. Parker Foundation’s ongoing commitment to creating opportunities that inspire confidence, curiosity, and ambition in young people. It also highlights the intentional work of Great Mills High School, whose educators continue to seek meaningful partnerships that extend learning beyond the classroom.

During the visit, students explored campus facilities, learned about academic opportunities, and experienced the energy and sense of community at a historically Black college and university through the basketball game. Many students shared that the trip shifted their mindset, prompting them to seriously consider college as a realistic next step.
One student described the experience as “amazing,” noting how seeing a college campus in person changed how they think about their future. Additionally, she shared “As a young lady playing basketball for Great Mills High School, after touring Howard University, I was excited to see how its competitive athletic programs and strong business school align with my academic and athletic goals,” said student Saniyah Dyson. “As the saying goes, the journey is the destination.”

The partnership between Great Mills High School and the Carolyn E. Parker Foundation demonstrates how exposure can transform perspective. By opening doors to higher education experiences, both organizations are helping students envision and pursue new possibilities.
