ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Friends of Maryland State Parks is hosting an event tree lovers won’t want to miss.

The Bob Ross Happy Little Run For the Trees Virtual 5K is a national event that lets you run, walk or roll anywhere you choose between April 18 and 26. The event celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day and allows participants to go at their own pace.

Plus, this year will also feature an in-person option at Sandy Point State Park. This event will take place Saturday, April 18, 2026, and will feature live music and a special Arbor Day gift. Make sure to specify in your registration if you’re planning to attend this special event.

Your 5K participation, whether in-person or virtual, will also count toward your “Miles for Maryland” if you choose to do it at a state park.

The $36 registration fee goes toward planting trees, improving habitat and supporting small grants that benefit state parks all across Maryland. Every participant receives a Bob Ross T-shirt, finisher’s medal, bib and sticker.

The event fills up quickly, so organizers encourage anyone interested to sign up as soon as possible. Packets will begin mailing in March, and you’ll get all the information you need.

The name of the event comes from painter and TV host Bob Ross, who hosted the show “The Joy of Painting” from 1983-94. Ross encouraged viewers that mistakes were “happy accidents” and an opportunity to paint “happy little trees.” Ross’s relaxing, accessible painting show remains popular today.
