CHARLOTTE HALL, Md. — One person was killed and another was flown to a trauma center following a serious early morning crash on Budds Creek Road in Charlotte Hall on February 26, 2026.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 5:58 a.m. for a reported motor vehicle crash into the woods at the intersection of Budds Creek Road and Stines Store Road. Initial reports indicated a single vehicle off the roadway with a caller advising that no one had exited and that occupants were believed to be trapped.
Shortly after, responders determined the crash involved two vehicles in a head-on collision. One patient was reported unresponsive, and the roadway was shut down in both directions as crews worked the scene.
Command confirmed one individual was trapped inside a vehicle. A Maryland State Police helicopter was placed on pre-launch as responders worked to free the occupant. At approximately 6:16 a.m., emergency personnel advised the trapped individual had died at the scene.
A second patient, identified as a 20-year-old male, was conscious with a patent airway and reported head and shoulder injuries. A helicopter was utilized to transport him to UM Capital Region Medical Center for treatment.
Due to the severity of the crash and the helicopter landing operations, Budds Creek Road was completely shut down. Craine Highway was also temporarily closed in both directions near the Veterans Museum to accommodate the landing zone, with assistance requested from the Maryland Transportation Authority. Crews later moved the landing zone to a hard surface area to facilitate the air transport.
The incident command was terminated after the scene was stabilized, and Maryland State Police responded to assist with the crash investigation.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
