RIDGE, Md. — The Southern Maryland community is stepping up to support a 6-year-old girl who lost her foot in a traumatic lawn mower accident earlier this month.

On July 9, 2025, Brooklynn was picking grapes near her home while her father, Khyri, mowed the lawn at her grandparents’ house. As he came around a vine, Brooklynn moved to get out of the way, tripped, and her foot went under the mower. Her parents acted immediately to stop the bleeding and called for emergency assistance.

Due to inclement weather, a medevac helicopter originally scheduled to transport her to Children’s National in Washington, D.C., was diverted. Instead, Maryland State Police Trooper 7 flew Brooklynn to Nemours Children’s Hospital in Delaware, a pediatric trauma center more than three hours away. She remains in stable condition and underwent surgery on Monday, July 14. Doctors determined that amputation was necessary, beginning a long journey of recovery that includes blood transfusions, rehabilitation, and learning to walk again with a prosthetic.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by her aunt, Darby Sauls, has raised more than $14,580 toward a $16,000 goal as of this week. The funds will help cover mounting medical bills, travel expenses, and income lost as both parents take leave from work to care for Brooklynn and her siblings.

Khyri has remained at Brooklynn’s bedside since the accident, while Miranda, her mother, is driving back and forth daily to care for their two other children, Autumn and KJ. The family faces a lengthy recovery process that will involve follow-up surgeries, physical therapy, and the long-term costs of prosthetics and mobility support.

Community members are also being asked to send handmade cards, drawings, or heartfelt messages to help lift Brooklynn’s spirits during her hospital stay. Items can be mailed to:

Darby Sauls
P.O. Box 66
Dameron, MD 20628

All mail will be delivered to Brooklynn at the hospital.

The fundraiser, titled Support the Wells Family During Brooklynn’s Strong Fight, continues to receive donations and shares as neighbors, friends, and strangers alike offer their support during this critical time.
