ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — Runners and walkers of all ages will gather in Historic St. Mary’s City on May 2 for the annual Run For The Kids 5K, an event organized by Great Mills High School’s Mini-THON club to raise money for pediatric cancer research and family support.

“All of the proceeds go toward the Four Diamonds Organization,” said Marlin Smith, race coordinator, in a recent interview with The BayNet. “Money donated to this organization is used for music therapy, art therapy, private hospital rooms, research equipment, and improving the quality of life of children with life-limiting conditions. Money is also used to pay for specialized nurse educators, chaplains and nutritionists for children and families affected by pediatric cancer.”

Participants can arrive as early as 6:30 a.m. to warm up before the race begins at 8 a.m. The course runs through a mix of roads and woodland trails and will be marked with volunteers stationed to guide runners and act as crossing guards. Following the race, snacks will be provided, and an awards ceremony will recognize top male and female finishers in each age group.

“Participants can enjoy being outside and physically active while also raising money for pediatric cancer research,” Smith said.

Historic St. Mary’s City, with its scenic landscape and colonial buildings, provides more than just a backdrop.

“Historic St. Mary’s City is a meaningful location because of the scenic landscape and colonial buildings. It is a popular place in the community for running and there is a 5K course already present that goes through the trails,” Smith explained.

Smith, who has been involved in the race as a participant and volunteer, stepped up as organizer this year and told us what a privilege it was for him. “I was personally inspired to organize this race through my interest in running and from seeing my friend Brady organize the race the last two years. Two years ago, I ran in the race and last year I volunteered at the race. This year, I have stepped up to organize the race since Brady graduated last year,” he said.

Last year, the event raised more than $2,000. This year, organizers hope to raise more than $3,000. For those who cannot run, there are other ways to support the cause. “People can get involved by reaching out to me if they would like to volunteer, donating to Mini-THON, and spreading word about the race,” Smith said.

Registration for the 5K is $25 and is available online at RunSignUp.com through May 2 or in person on race day, May 2, between 7 and 7:30 a.m.

Smith encourages the community to take part, whether by running, volunteering or donating. “If I could share one message with the community about the Run For The Kids 5K, it would be that the race is a great opportunity to visit Historic St. Mary’s City, exercise outside, spend time with family and friends, and support a worthy cause,” he said, emphasizing the event’s blend of fun, fitness and philanthropy.
