Steny H. Hoyer will remain in the U.S. House of Representatives for another two years. The veteran Democrat lawmaker easily staved off a spirited challenge by Maryland House of Delegates Minority Leader Anthony J. โ€œTonyโ€ Oโ€™Donnell in the Maryland Fifth Congressional District race.

The latest count from Maryland election officials had Hoyer leading 177,766 votes to Oโ€™Donnellโ€™s 75,745.

Oโ€™Donnell had hoped to win the two counties he represents in the Maryland General Assembly, his home county, Calvert and St. Maryโ€™s, as well as Southern Anne Arundel and show respectably in the Democratic stronghold jurisdictions Prince Georgeโ€™s and Charles.ย

In Calvert, with 24 precincts reporting, Hoyer leads by 636 votes. There are over 2,000 absentee ballots still to be counted with over 900 of the ballots issued to registered Democrats.

In St. Maryโ€™s, Hoyerโ€™s home county, the incumbentโ€™s margin of victory was over 3,000 votes.

Oโ€™Donnell narrowly outpolled Hoyer in South Anne Arundel. Hoyer buried Oโ€™Donnell in Charles and Prince Georgeโ€™s counties. In Prince Georgeโ€™s Hoyer garnered 81,619 votes to 11,867 for Oโ€™Donnell.ย  In Charles, Hoyer tallied 47,699 votes to 19,351 for Oโ€™Donnell.
