HUNTINGTOWN, Md. — A 28-year-old Huntingtown man has been charged with assault after a verbal argument over a lost cell phone allegedly escalated into a physical altercation where he allegedly choked a woman.
The incident occurred on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, at about 11:17 a.m. at a residence in the Huntingtown area. According to charging documents, the female victim stated she woke up and could not find her phone. When she asked Matthew Allen Divver, 28, of Huntingtown, if he knew where it was, she said he allegedly threw his own phone at her, striking her in the shoulder.
The woman reported that the subsequent verbal altercation became physical when Divver allegedly pushed her to the floor as he was leaving, got on top of her and began to choke her while stating, “I’m in charge of this house.” She locked the door after he left and called 911.
In his statement to deputies, Divver claimed the woman initiated the physical altercation after an argument over cannabis, and he denied touching or strangling her. Deputies noted a bruise on Divver’s nose, which he told them was from a prior incident unrelated to the dispute.
Despite the lack of visible marks on the victim from the alleged strangulation, Divver was placed under arrest for second-degree assault. The charge is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $2,500.
Court records show that after an initial hold, Judge Michelle R. Saunders ordered Divver released on a $5,000 unsecured personal bond. A trial is scheduled for Oct. 3, 2025.
