PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County libraries are hoping to help residents practice their bilingual conversation skills.
The Twin Beaches branch and the Prince Frederick branch are each hosting bilingual conversation hours this year — each hour will consist of 30 minutes of conversation in Spanish and 30 minutes of conversation in English.
The Twin Beaches events will be every Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the Prince Frederick events will be every Monday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Registration is encouraged for the conversation hours, and you should register each week for the event you plan to attend to give organizers an accurate expectation of who will be there.
Conversation hours give people the opportunity to practice speaking a second language in a practical setting. Practicing the language and developing conversational skills are crucial to mastering a language. Plus, this event fosters dialogue between community members so they can help each other learn.
Up to 23% of people living in the United States are bilingual or multilingual. The most common languages people speak in the United States other than English are Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Arabic, according to 2019 census data.
For now, Calvert Library is only offering a bilingual conversation hour in Spanish and English, but this event is a great way to enhance or practice your language skills.
