spring forward daylight savings time

CALIFORNIA, Md. — With Daylight Savings Time just around the corner, residents are reminded to ‘spring forward’ and adjust their clocks one hour ahead at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024. Many electronic devices will automatically make this adjustment.

Daylight Saving Time, a practice designed to extend evening daylight during the longer days of the year, is also an excellent opportunity for residents to check in on several safety measures.

Test smoke alarms and CO detectors in your home. If these devices are more than a decade old, they should be replaced with newer models equipped with a 10-year, sealed battery — these are readily available at local hardware stores. It’s also a good time to replenish both home and car emergency medical kits.

The annual date also serves as a nudge for families to create or revise their Emergency Plans. FEMA.gov provides helpful guides and samples for those unsure where to start.

In Maryland, sunrise and sunset will shift with the time change. On Saturday, the sunrise will be at 6:25 a.m., and sunset will occur at 6:08 p.m. However, on Sunday, following the time change, sunrise will be at 7:24 a.m., and sunset will extend to 7:09 p.m., giving us an extra hour of daylight in the evening.

Daylight Saving Time will conclude later this year on November 3, 2024, when residents will ‘fall back’ one hour.
