It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of James Edward Burt (Jim), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Jim passed away on February 15, 2026, following complications from heart surgery.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Jim served as a helicopter pilot for 20 years, earning the respect and admiration of those he worked with. After retiring from the Navy, Jim continued his service to his country in government work until his retirement in 2024.

Jimโ€™s zest for life was evident in everything he did. He cherished time spent with family, loved traveling, and was known for his incredible storytelling. He found joy in working on his boat, tirelessly fixing up his house (much to the chagrin of his wife), and always keeping busy with projects. A man of energy and action, Jim could never sit still. He was always on the go, whether it was tinkering, working, or sharing a good laugh with loved ones.

Jimโ€™s sense of humor was a larger-than-life personality and his love for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His family takes comfort knowing that his legacy of kindness, service, and love for adventure will live on in his children, grandchildren, and everyone whose life he touched.

Jim was the loving husband of Herdis Linda Burt, devoted father to Sabrina Burt and Tanya Tchinski, and a cherished grandfather to Justin Andrew Juron, Jason Alexander Juron, Isabella Harlow Tchinski, and Thomas James Waring. He is survived by his siblings, Michael Burt and Karen Steichen and by numerous family members in the United States, Iceland, and Australia.

The family will recevie friends on Saturday, March 7, 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD.Where a celebration of life will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 AM, followed by a gathering at Tall Timbers Marina at 12:30 PM.

Jimโ€™s favorite Hawaiian shirt was always a part of his fun-loving spirit, so please feel free to wear your most colorful and funky shirt in his honor. Jim will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad in Valley Lee, MD in recognition of Jimโ€™s commitment to service.
Jimโ€™s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to those who have supported them through this difficult time. May his memory live on in our hearts forever.
