CALIFORNIA, Md. — JOANN, the well-known fabric and craft retailer, has announced plans to close around 500 stores nationwide as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring.
The closures include 13 locations in Maryland—among them, the Prince Frederick, Brandywine and California stores—along with 13 in Virginia and two in Delaware.
The company stated that the decision follows a comprehensive review of its financial and operational challenges. “Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN,” the retailer said in a statement.
JOANN filed a motion in court on Feb. 12, 2025, seeking approval to proceed with the closures. The company did not provide a specific timeline for when affected locations will shut down.
This move is the latest in a series of large-scale retail closures. In December, Party City announced it would shutter all its stores following mass layoffs at its headquarters. Macy’s followed in January, revealing plans to close 66 underperforming stores nationwide.
JOANN emphasized its commitment to supporting employees and customers during the transition. “This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” the company said.
