John dances his way towards becoming the fundraising king…
The Annual United Way of Calvert County is set to introduce a new King and Queen next weekend. One enterprising teacher and coach, John McGuffin has a flair for royalty and intends to break records on his way to becoming crowned King of the Mardi Gras.
To date, McGuffin, resplendent in his tuxedo top and wild and colorful golf pants, has been working hard to be the highest charitable contributor and the title of King. He has accomplished almost $34,000 in donations to this point for the cause and seeks help to set the record of $40,000 in the coming few days.
When asked why he decided to raise funds for the United Way of Calvert, McGuffin stated that, “I want to help the community and this charity keeps all the money raised locally to help our community,
The algebra teacher at Huntingtown High school has performed a whirlwind of activities and fundraising for the cause including pulling off a sponsor-less golf tournament on President’s Day where he managed to raise $4400. “It was a cool day and it snowed that evening, but we pulled it off,” beamed McGuffin
McGuffin has a website where he works to solicit donations – www.john4king.com. As an aid to the cause McGuffin has created two videos that are receiving quite a bit of play. We are creating a third video which should be up by the end of the weekend,” said McGuffin.
There are also opportunities to contribute in other ways. McGuffin has put together a raffle for a great $3900 value luxury suite game at a Sunday National’s baseball game this April 17.. Two lucky winners will receive 6 seats in the fully catered luxury suite behind home plate. The drawing will be held on Feb. 26 at the John4King event. Visit the website to purchase tickets.
Also, this weekend, McGuffin has arranged for people who buy a shrub to have Kelly’s Nursery contribute 20 percent to the cause. And at Scalped Salon, raffle tickets may be purchased for a full six-months of Scalped Salon & Spa luxury treatments.
On Saturday, Feb. 26, McGuffin will hold a Texas Holdem’ tournament as well where the raffle for the National’s Luxury Suite package will be drawn. The tournament is being held at the Pax Real Estate offices right next to KFC in Prince Frederick. Entry is only a $100 buy-in of which $30 goes to The United Way of Calvert and $70 to the prize pool.
