CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. – The Mayor and Town Council announce the resignation of Councilwoman Kathleen Berault, effective July 9, 2025. Councilwoman Berault shared the reasons for her decision during the May 15th Town Meeting, citing her upcoming move to Delaware to be closer to her spouse, pending the sale of their home.

In her time on the Town Council, Councilwoman Berault has exemplified steadfast dedication to public service. She has served not only as a Councilmember but also as Chair of the Planning and Zoning Board, a member of the Tree Board and the Board of Port Wardens, and as Town Council Liaison to the Green Team.

Prior to her tenure in Chesapeake Beach, Councilwoman Berault had an extensive and distinguished career in law enforcement. She began as a cadet with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., and later joined the Prince George’s County Police Department, retiring after 20 years with the rank of Major. Her final command was with the Office of Professional Responsibility, overseeing the Internal Affairs Division, Departmental Shootings, and Use of Force Compliance. Following her retirement from law enforcement, she continued her service at the federal level with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), overseeing IRS operations for more than a decade.

“It has been my great honor and pleasure to serve as a member of the Board of Port Wardens, the Tree Board, the Green Team, and most recently, the Town Council. Although it is bittersweet to leave Chesapeake Beach, I will always cherish the Town and its residents,” said Councilwoman Kathleen Berault.

The Mayor, Town Council, and Town staff extend their deepest gratitude to Councilwoman Berault for her unwavering commitment to the Chesapeake Beach community. Her service reflects the true spirit of public dedication.

“Thank you for your service, dedication, and words of wisdom that have made our community stronger. Your tireless efforts to preserve the natural beauty and character of the Chesapeake Bay will be felt for years to come,” said Mayor Bruce A. Wahl.

In accordance with the Town Charter, the Town Council will appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of Councilwoman Berault’s term. Details regarding the appointment process will be posted on the Town’s website in the coming week.

We extend our warmest wishes to the Berault-Chmielewski family and look forward to welcoming them back to Chesapeake Beach in the future.
