LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A kayaking scare on the Potomac River shoreline ended safely Friday evening after a Good Samaritan helped a man and woman back to shore without injury.

The incident was reported just before 8 p.m. on Aug. 29, 2025, near Newtowne Neck State Park, where dispatchers were told a man was clinging to an overturned kayak about 400 yards from land. His wife swam out to help him despite not wearing a life jacket, according to radio traffic.

Maryland State Police Aviation Command’s Trooper 7 was prepared to assist while the Coast Guard and Natural Resources Police were notified.

The Good Samaritan reached the pair before emergency units arrived, guiding them and their kayak safely to shore. Officials said neither required medical attention.
