PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County is participating again in the One Maryland, One Book (OMOB) program. The 2025 book selection is “Kin: Rooted in Hope” by Carole Boston Weatherford, with art by her son, Jeffrey Boston Weatherford.

Calvert Library Executive Director Carrie Wilson presented the book at the Sept. 9 Board of County Commissioners meeting. The book is a collection of verse and illustration about the Weatherfords’ ancestors, who are among the founders of Maryland. The poems and illustrations give the ancestors of this mother and son a voice through enslavement, the Civil War and Reconstruction.

“Kin: Rooted in Hope” was published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers in 2023 and is suitable for ages 10 and up. The book was a Coretta Scott King Honor Book and a Boston Globe–Horn Book Poetry Award winner.

The Weatherfords will hold two events Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Southern Maryland. An event titled “Kin: Rooted in Hope: A Discussion Among Descendants” is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. at the College of Southern Maryland’s La Plata campus. Wilson called the events “a conversation among descendants.”

OMOB is in its 18th year. Each year, a committee of librarians, educators, authors and book lovers convenes to pick a book that revolves around a common theme that can create a “shared reading experience.” This year’s theme is “what we collect, and what we tell.”

Wilson added that this theme is the same as the upcoming Calvert County Longest Table event, where attendees will share stories about living in Calvert County. Wilson also highlighted other library events revolving around genealogy that Calvert residents can attend.
