SOLOMONS, Md. — Cody Alexander Brady, 31, of Lusby, and Brandon Ian Brunton, 24, of Lusby, have each been charged with second-degree assault following a reported knife-related confrontation on Oct. 10, 2025.

Police were dispatched to the Solomons Towne Centre for a reported assault involving a knife. According to police statements, Brady called 911 and reported that a red Dodge vehicle nearly struck him and that the driver allegedly brandished a knife at him. Responding officers were unable to locate the vehicle prior to arriving at the scene.

According to court documents, officers wrote that Brady claimed he had been walking on the sidewalk and crossed over the driveway of the Solomons Weis when a red Dodge, allegedly driven by Papa John’s employee Brandon Ian Brunton, “peeled out” of the parking lot and was not going to stop at the stop sign.

Brady reported that he used his cellphone flashlight to signal the driver and stated he was nearly hit. Brady told police that Brunton allegedly displayed a knife from inside the vehicle, prompting Brady to pull out his own knife. Brady also told police he threatened to throw a can of Red Bull at Brunton during the confrontation.

According to police records and Brady’s statements, Brunton allegedly exited the vehicle with the knife, and the two men engaged in a verbal altercation.

Brady reported that while he walked towards Papa John’s to report the incident to the manager, Bruton followed him and drove over a curb. He also reported that Bruton took off his shirt, went inside Papa John’s, then came back outside and showed his knife again, saying he would cut Brady.

Statements from Papa John’s staff indicated that Brunton asked to be clocked out so he could “go fight,” but he was directed to go home instead.

Police later contacted Brunton by phone. He stated that he had not initially seen Brady while exiting the parking lot and acknowledged that he had driven close to him. Brunton reported that he got out of his vehicle to apologize when Brady allegedly became hostile, pulled a pocketknife, and threatened him.

Brunton told police that after he returned to Papa John’s and clocked out, he saw Brady walking towards Papa John’s. Brunton also admitted that he returned outside “to finish what he started,” according to the report.

Court documents state that Brady went inside Subway, and Brunton then left the area.

A third-party witness told officers that Brady appeared to be the first individual to display a knife during the verbal dispute, according to the police report. Officers attempted to obtain surveillance footage from Weis, but no staff member on-site had access to the security system, and video evidence could not be retrieved.

Brady and Brunton each face one count of second-degree assault. Under Maryland law, second-degree assault carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to $2,500.

Brady’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 1, 2025, while Brunton’s trial is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2026, through the Calvert County District Court.
